Pogacar Wins Milan-San Remo in Two-Up Sprint With Pidcock

Tadej Pogačar has finally claimed the Monument that has long eluded him, capturing a thrilling Milan-San Remo victory in 6 hours 35 minutes and 49 seconds in a hard-fought two-up battle against Tom Pidcock on the legendary Via Roma. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG leader's victory marks a significant milestone in his career and adds another prestigious Monument to his expanding palmarès, though the path to the finish was far from straightforward.

Pogačar's day nearly ended in disaster before the decisive finishing phase. In a dramatic moment on the approach to the Cipressa, the Slovenian champion crashed hard, drawing gasps from his team and concern from rivals who sensed an opportunity to finally crack the seemingly invincible leader. For many riders, such a setback with one of the final climbs still to come would signal the beginning of the end. Pogačar, however, is made of different material. With support from his UAE Team Emirates teammates Brandon McNulty and Isaac del Toro, he regrouped quickly and chased back to the front, demonstrating the composure and determination that defines his racing character.

The race came to a head over the final climbs and descent to San Remo's finish. Pidcock, representing Pinarello-Q36.5, made a desperate bid for glory, but Pogačar's superior strength proved decisive in the final moments. On the Via Roma, Pogačar unleashed his sprint with brutal efficiency, passing Pidcock with a half-wheel margin to secure the victory. Wout van Aert claimed the final podium spot at 4 seconds down, his Visma-Lease a Bike squad unable to deliver him into the winning move despite their considerable strength and experience at the classics.

Pogačar's triumph at La Classicissima underlines his dominance across different terrain and race formats. Having already demonstrated his superiority in stage racing, one-day classics, and time trials, the 27-year-old now holds victories across the full spectrum of professional cycling. The mental strength to recover from a crash and execute a near-perfect final kilometres showcased why many regard him as the greatest all-rounder of the modern generation.

With the cobbled Monuments now on the horizon, and particularly the Tour of Flanders just two weeks away, Pogačar's Milan-San Remo triumph has set him up as the favourite for further Monument success. The Giro d'Italia and Tour de France remain his primary objectives this season, but his statement victory in San Remo has sent a clear message to his rivals: Pogačar is operating at a level above the rest, and the spring Classics are very much in play.
