Pidcock Confirms Tour de France Return as GC Contender With Pinarello-Q36.5 — "No One Can Take That Away From Us"

Tom Pidcock has confirmed he will return to the Tour de France in July as the GC leader of Pinarello-Q36.5, marking the British rider's first appearance at the race since 2024 and his team's debut at the Grande Boucle. The 26-year-old's confirmation comes after Q36.5 earned automatic qualification by virtue of their position in the UCI rankings, removing any wildcard uncertainty from their planning.

The Briton's Grand Tour credentials were transformed last September when he finished third overall at the Vuelta a España, a breakthrough result that proved his climbing ability over three weeks could trouble the sport's established GC hierarchy. It was a performance that justified his controversial mid-season move from INEOS Grenadiers and signalled that Q36.5's ambitious project under manager Doug Ryder had genuine substance.

"We have earned our place and no one can take that away from us," Pidcock said of the team's Tour qualification. "Missing the race last year was frustrating, but it gave us time to build something properly. Now we go to Barcelona on July 4 with a real plan, not just to survive but to compete at the front."

The squad around Pidcock has been significantly strengthened for the challenge. New signings Eddie Dunbar, Fred Wright, Chris Harper and Thomas Gloag will form a mountain support group capable of keeping their leader in contention through the Alps and Pyrenees. The addition of Sam Bennett gives the team a sprint option for the flat stages, allowing them to target results across the full three weeks.

Sports Director Kurt Bogaerts has been cautious about setting podium targets, calling it a "dangerous ambition" for a team making its Tour debut. But Ryder countered that Pidcock thrives on being underestimated: "The worst thing you can do with Tom is to say 'I don't think you can do that,' because that's like putting a red flag in front of a bull."

Pidcock's spring campaign has been focused on maintaining his climbing form through Volta a Catalunya, where he crashed but showed strong legs before the incident, and is now targeting the Brabantse Pijl on April 17 before a final altitude block ahead of the Tour. He will face Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel in what promises to be the most competitive Tour de France field in years.

The 2026 Tour starts in Barcelona with a team time trial — the first at the race since 2019 — which will immediately test Q36.5's collective strength against the super-teams of UAE Team Emirates and Visma-Lease a Bike. Whether Pidcock can stay with Pogacar in the mountains remains the defining question, but after the Vuelta, few are willing to write him off entirely.
