Onley Ruled Out of the Tour de France After Terrifying Auvergne Crash Leaves Him With a Damaged Shoulder

Britain's Oscar Onley will miss the 2026 Tour de France, his Netcompany-Ineos team confirmed, after a heavy crash at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes left the young climber with a significant shoulder injury. It is a cruel blow for one of the sport's brightest talents, who had built his entire spring around a first tilt at the Barcelona Grand Départ.

The crash itself was as frightening as any seen this season. Descending at speed on stage 6 of the Auvergne race, the 23-year-old from Kelso lost control and was pitched over a roadside safety barrier, only escaping a fall into a ravine when he was caught in the branches of a tree. He was extracted and taken for assessment, and while the immediate fear of a catastrophic outcome eased, subsequent scans confirmed a dislocated shoulder and damage serious enough to end his Tour hopes.

"Further medical investigations have confirmed a significant shoulder injury," Netcompany-Ineos said in a statement announcing his withdrawal. The team did not name a replacement or offer a timeline for his return, saying only that the priority now is a full recovery for a rider they regard as central to their long-term ambitions.

The disappointment is amplified by Onley's rising trajectory. He finished fourth overall at the Tour last year, a breakthrough that made him one of the most coveted young stage racers in the peloton and prompted Netcompany-Ineos to buy him out of his contract with Picnic PostNL in one of the biggest transfer deals of the off-season. A first Tour in the team's colours was set to be the centrepiece of his 2026 campaign.

Onley's absence also robs the general classification of another genuine top-ten threat at a race already hit hard by withdrawals. His exit joins those of Wout van Aert, sidelined by an elbow infection, and Pello Bilbao, ruled out by a viral illness, in a run-up that has stripped the startlist of experience, attacking flair and climbing depth in equal measure.

For Onley, attention now turns to rehabilitation and a possible return later in the season, with the Vuelta a España and the World Championships offering routes back to top-level racing if his recovery goes smoothly. For Netcompany-Ineos, the task is to reshape a Tour project that had leaned heavily on their new signing — and to keep faith that his best days at the Grand Boucle are still ahead of him.
