The almost pancake-flat 197.6-kilometre stage from Merelbeke-Melle to the North Sea coast was always destined for a bunch finish, and the sprinters' teams controlled proceedings throughout. A small breakaway was allowed its moment in the spotlight before being swept up inside the final kilometres, setting up the head-to-head between the peloton's premier finishers.
When the lead-out trains wound up the pace on the run-in to Knokke-Heist, it was Soudal Quick-Step who delivered Merlier into the perfect position. The victory means Merlier consolidates his hold on the leader's jersey, with the bonus seconds gathered across the opening stages building a useful cushion before the race heads into more selective terrain.
