Hayter Blasts to a Fourth British Time Trial Title in the Welsh Heat as Backstedt Leads an All-Welsh Sweep

Ethan Hayter produced a blistering ride in blistering heat to win the elite men's title at the British National Time Trial Championships on Thursday, the Soudal Quick-Step rider covering the 38.4km course around Lampeter in 44:10 at an average of 52.15km/h. It is the fourth elite time trial crown of Hayter's career and a second in a row, confirming his status as the country's premier man against the clock as the WorldTour heads towards the Tour de France.

Hayter's margin was emphatic. Connor Swift took the silver medal for NetCompany-Ineos, with Josh Charlton of the Ineos Grenadiers Racing Academy completing the podium in third. On a rolling West Wales parcours and in temperatures that climbed well into the thirties, pacing and cooling proved as decisive as raw power, and Hayter judged his effort to perfection from the start ramp.

For a rider whose season has been built around versatility — sprints, classics and the road — the national time trial jersey is a reminder of the engine that first marked Hayter out as a generational talent on the track. He will now wear the red, white and blue bands in time trials for the next twelve months, a striking calling card whenever the race against the clock comes around.

The women's race produced one of the stories of the championships: an all-Welsh podium led home by the defending champion. Zoe Backstedt of Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto defended her elite women's title on home roads, with Anna Morris second and Zoe's older sister Elynor Backstedt, of UAE Team ADQ, third. A Welsh one-two-three on Welsh tarmac gave the host nation a result to savour.

For the Backstedt family it was a particularly sweet afternoon. Daughters of former Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt, both Zoe and Elynor have carried the family name back to the top of British cycling, and sharing the podium in Wales added a layer of sentiment to an already dominant ride from the younger sister, a multiple junior world champion still only at the start of her senior career.

The time trials open a championship week that closes with the elite road races, where the bands will again be on the line before the peloton scatters towards Barcelona for the Tour de France Grand Départ. For Hayter and Backstedt, though, the hard work is already done: both leave Lampeter as national champions, and both will carry their new jerseys into the biggest weeks of the season.
