Giro d'Italia Women 2026 Final GC — Vollering Wins By Overturning Van der Breggen On The Last Day

The 2026 Giro d'Italia Women produced one of the great final-day reversals in stage-racing history. Demi Vollering began the ninth and final stage 49 seconds down on Anna van der Breggen and finished it in the maglia rosa, attacking on the Colletta di Brondello to flip the entire podium on the road into Saluzzo.

Vollering's winning margin over Antonia Niedermaier was 35 seconds, with Van der Breggen — who had led the race since the Nevegal time trial — sliding all the way to third at 1:37. It was a cruel ending for the comeback queen, but a deserved coronation for Vollering, who completes the set of all three women's Grand Tours.

The day's stage went to home favourite Elisa Longo Borghini, who won the reduced bunch sprint ahead of Niamh Fisher-Black and Niedermaier, while Vollering came home fourth on the stage with the overall already secured.

Final General Classification

  1. Demi Vollering (FDJ-SUEZ) — winner
  2. Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM) +0:35
  3. Anna van der Breggen +1:37

Niedermaier's runner-up finish is the standout result of her young career and stamps her as a Grand Tour contender for years to come. Van der Breggen, two seasons removed from retirement, can take enormous pride in leading the race for six stages and forcing Vollering to wait until the very last climb to break her.

The points and mountains competitions reflected an aggressive, climber-driven race, with the maglia rosa battle overshadowing every other jersey. The result also reshapes the form guide for the Tour de France Femmes in July, where Vollering, Niedermaier and a resurgent Van der Breggen will renew hostilities.
