Backstedt Blasts Clear To Win Tour de Suisse Women Stage 3 In A Dominant Bad Ragaz Sprint
Zoe Backstedt produced the standout sprint of the Tour de Suisse Women so far, exploding clear of the field in Bad Ragaz to win Stage 3 by several bike lengths. On the first genuine sprinter's day of the race, the Briton was simply a class apart, distancing her rivals so emphatically that the result was beyond doubt long before the line.
The 120-kilometre stage started and finished in Bad Ragaz and was the first day without a categorised climb, handing the fast women their opening to shine. But it was far from straightforward. A strong and dangerous breakaway took shape featuring Alice Towers, Juliette Berthet, Loes Adegeest, Ruby Roseman-Gannon, Megan Arens, Femke Markus and Katharina Sadnik — and crucially it also contained GC contender Kim Le Court, briefly projecting her into the virtual race lead.
That threat forced the bunch into action, and the peloton tore through the flat, fast parcours to reel the move back in. Laura Asencio rolled the dice with a late attack of her own, but with the sprinters' teams organised behind her, a bunch finish was always the likeliest outcome. The closing kilometres were not without drama, a large crash involving Laurens Dickson adding a nervous edge to the run-in.
When the sprint finally opened up, one rider stood above the rest. Backstedt timed her effort to perfection and powered away with a turn of speed nobody could match, opening a gap of several lengths by the time she crossed the line. Lily Williams took second and Shari Bossuyt completed the podium in third, both well adrift of the winner.
It is a statement victory for Backstedt, whose versatility across the road and the track has long marked her out as one of the most exciting talents in the women's peloton. The raw power she showed in Bad Ragaz suggests her sprinting has reached a new level just as the cobbled and hilly Classics give way to the heart of the stage-racing season.
With the sprinters' day done, the overall battle stays poised for the days ahead. The general classification favourites, led by Demi Vollering and home hope Marlen Reusser, will turn their focus to Saturday's time trial in Aarburg, where the race against the clock should begin to draw the GC into sharper relief.
